Frequently Asked Questions

What will the changes to service be?

The work to connect the existing line with our new Dudley extension will take approximately 18 days. Sandwell Council will begin their work on Dudley Street bridge at the same time but will need longer to complete this activity as they will effectively be reconstructing the bridge itself.

What alternative arrangements are in place?

We are committed to keeping our customers moving throughout these essential works. The following alternative travel arrangements will be in place for our customers:

From Saturday 23 March until Tuesday 9 April:

  • National Express (NX) bus services:
    • 47 between Wednesbury bus station and West Bromwich

Please note: The timetable for the NX79 and NX74 bus services have been enhanced during these dates to provide a more frequent service (buses up to every 5 minutes). The enhanced timetable also includes a connecting service for the first and last tram times.

All dates:

  • West Midlands Railway train services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham (season ticket holders only)
Why can’t we operate a service into Birmingham city centre?

Once the work begins, we would be unable to bring any trams past the work site which means that if there was a fault with a tram, we would not be able to bring it in to the workshop for inspection or repair. In addition, there isn’t a suitable place to store the tram while not in service.

Can I request a refund for the Metro element of my ticket, for the dates that it is affected?

As ticket acceptance is in place, which includes bus and rail alternatives for customers, we will not be issuing refunds for the Metro element of any tickets or passes.

In exceptional circumstances, requests will be considered on a case by case basis. Please email your request to customerservices@westmidlandsmetro.com

If you have a direct debit membership, you can contact the organisation that issued your pass – this will either be West Midlands Combined Authority or National Express.
