A group of West Midlands Metro customers has been given a close up look at work being carried out ahead of the opening of the tramway extension through the heart of Birmingham.

Members of the Metro Matters customer forum were invited to a tour of the works, including a guided walk along the new line from Grand Central to Centenary Square.

The visit was organised by the Midland Metro Alliance, the organisation responsible for the planning, design and construction of new tram extensions for behalf of Transport for West Midlands.

The Birmingham Westside extension is the latest phase of a project that will eventually see the tramway extend to Hagley Road in Edgbaston, and forum members were given a fascinating insight into the construction process.

Vicki Bennett, Customer Service Manager, explained: “The extension is really taking shape and members of the forum were particularly excited to see the tram stop platforms and shelters in place.”

“They were also interested to learn about the work of the alliance in developing other extension projects and are now looking forward to being amongst the first customers to take the tram to Centenary Square!”

Providing direct contact between a broad cross-section of customers and the Metro management team, Metro Matters ensures the voice of customers is heard as the network improves and expands.

Antony Lowbridge-Ellis, Head of Communications for the Midland Metro Alliance, said of the visit, “The Metro Matters panel members are massive supporters of public transport and we were delighted to give them a bit more information on the work we’re doing in the region on behalf of Transport for West Midlands.”
