Raising awareness about organ donation

Great Granddad, Michael Willis underwent a double lung transplant after suffering from a rare lung condition sarcoidosis and was only given six months to live.

Following his major operation, Michael and his wife Patricia set up the Michael Willis Foundation to raise awareness about organ donation.

He said: “I encourage everyone to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and help save and improve lives, just like mine was.”. Visit to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.

The law is changing in Spring 2020, when all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be an organ donor when they die unless they have opted out or are in one of the excluded groups.

Every day, around three people die in need of an organ, because not enough organs are available for transplant, thankfully Michael was one of the lucky ones that found a suitable donor. However, only 1% of people die in circumstances that would allow them to donate. The law is being changed to help save and improve more lives.

Organ donation remains an act of great generosity. Adults covered by the change in the law will still have a choice about whether they want to be an organ donor and their families will be consulted about donating their organs when they die.
