Creating a Metro for the Future

Our trams network lies at the heart of the region’s exciting public transport integration plans and we’re about to get a whole lot bigger and better.

Over the coming years, a massive £1.3 billion investment programme being spearheaded by the West Midlands Combined Authority and Transport for West Midlands is completed. This will allow more and more people to connect with the region’s work, leisure and education opportunities.

We’ll be working closely with our partners at Midland Metro Alliance – they’re the people who are turning the plans into reality – to ensure that as they build the new-look Metro, the needs of our customers remain right at the heart of everything we’re doing.

A network due to triple in size

Up to 21 Extra Trams

With a future network of 80+ tram stops, we will acquire a new fleet of vehicles.

New Information Systems

New control, communications & passenger information systems.

Upgraded Depot Facilities

An upgraded depot, control room & maintenance facilities.

3 New Planned Extensions

There are currently three extensions in the works to new destinations in the Midlands.

Transforming the Region

The West Midlands Metro expansion programme is set to deliver a truly integrated transport system for the future.

Metro will serve over 80 tram stops, more than 20 transport interchanges and link Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Dudley, Brierley Hill, Digbeth, North Solihull, Birmingham Airport, the NEC and HS2. It’s an ambitious project which will inevitably introduce new challenges. But it’s also exciting and game-changing.

Our Future Extensions

Working on behalf of Transport for West Midlands and the West Midlands Combined Authority, our partners in the Midland Metro Alliance are working to extend our current network by approximately 34km – helping to boost social and economic regeneration across the region.

Wednesbury to Brierley Hill

  • Currently Under Construction

The 11km extension will branch off the current West Midlands Metro line just east of the Wednesbury Great Western Street Metro stop, before heading through Tipton and Dudley on its way to Brierley Hill.

Some 7km of the route will be along a disused railway corridor and it will create an important link from Birmingham into the Black Country to support economic growth.

Birmingham Eastside

  • Currently Under Construction

Plans to further extend the tram network to the east of Birmingham are well underway. The route will separate from the existing line at Bull Street to serve Digbeth and the planned HS2 station at Curzon Street.

The route is planned to consist of 1.7km of twin track running from Bull Street to a to a new terminus at High Street Deritend. 

In 2023, an additional temporary terminus near the Clayton Hotel will allow the tramway to enter operational service earlier.

East Birmingham to Solihull

  • Currently In Planning Stage

An additional extension will see the Birmingham Eastside route taken further eastwards, serving Solihull and terminating at the core HS2 interchange.

When open it will allow access by tram to the airport, National Exhibition Centre and Genting Arena.

Completed Extensions

Wolverhampton Railway Station Extension

  • Completed in 2023

The extension is now open! The West Midlands Metro network now runs through to Wolverhampton Railway Station.

The Metro now stops at the city’s Bus Station on Pipers Row, before continuing to Wolverhampton Railway Station, allowing easy interchange with other modes of transport.

Birmingham Westside

  • Completed in 2022

The Birmingham Westside extension has brought the tramway further into the heart of Birmingham City Centre. Previously, paving the way for the Metro to expand deeper into the city centre.

The Metro now serves key stops at the Brindleyplace, Five Ways, before continuing to Edgbaston Village offering faster journey times and helping to reduce congestion throughout the city.
