An upgrade to overhead power lines on a section of West Midlands Metro is set to get underway next weekend.

As part of an ongoing investment programme in existing infrastructure, the work will see the installation of important new components to the lines between Soho Benson Road and Grand Central.

Carl Williams, West Midlands Metro Director of Operations, explained: “The work is essential to our future plans and is key to improving reliability as we look forward to providing an even better service to customers.”

To make way for the work, on the morning of Sunday, January 13, normal tram services will be suspended between Soho Benson Road and Grand Central with dedicated shuttle buses enabling customers to complete their journey.

Trams will continue to run every 15 minutes between Wolverhampton St George’sand Soho Benson Road.

Carl said: “Of course, we’re making every effort to ensure the minimum inconvenience to customers and expect to resume a full, through service by early afternoon.”

During the works, the following tram stops will be served every 15 minutes by the shuttle bus: Soho Benson Road, Jewellery Quarter, St Paul’s, St Chads and Bull Street, with a pick-up and drop-off point located in Old Square.

Additional West Midlands Metro staff will be on hand to offer travel advice, and tram tickets and passes will also be accepted on National Express bus service 74 between West Bromwich bus station (Stand A) and Birmingham.

Customers are also advised to follow the West Midlands Metro website and social media for further updates. At tram stops, they can also speak to a member of the Metro team directly by pressing the customer assistance button located on the shelters on each platform.

Carl added: “Once again we would like to apologise for any inconvenience, but by carrying out this essential work now, during one of our quietest periods, we can ensure the existing network is in tip-top condition as we prepare for further expansion.”
